TRAVEL IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD
Mon-Fri
July 6-10
8:30 am-12:30 pm
What makes travel special? Is it the places we go or the things we experience once we get there? Join us for a week of “backyard” travel, where our senses will take a vacation. We’ll hear the Spanish of Lexington’s Latino community, taste the flavors of the far east, and let our imaginations help us view what Lexington’s first inhabitants saw when they arrived in the Bluegrass. There will be field trips around town, great discussions, and like all travelers, we will explore different ways of documenting our discoveries through travel writing. No luggage necessary. Just bring your imagination and your sense of adventure. Led by Randi Ewing.
SPORTSWRITING
Mon-Fri
July 6-10
1:00-5:00 pm
Learn to write about all your favorite sports from football, basketball and baseball to roller-blading, skateboarding and frisbee golf. Campers will also shoot photographs, and design and produce a newspaper filled with their work. Led by John Lynch.
ARCHITECTURE
Mon-Fri
July 13-17
8:30 am-12:30 pm
Be an architect for a week! Take the architecture workshop and design your own room or even a dream house. Learn how to find images of your favorite buildings online and talk about what makes a building famous. Learn how to do negative space drawings. Then design a complete city made entirely of trash! Led by Dana Tackett.
WRITING UNDER THE RADAR
Mon-Fri
July 13-17
1:00-5:00 pm
You’re told “write what you know” but you don’t always want to share your life directly. This camp will focus on how to express your experiences in poetry or fiction without seeming to share your diary entries. You will learn to keep your personal life under the radar while you channel the lives of Bat Boy and writers of personal ads, the scenes of photos and paintings, and the plots of fairytales and horror films. You’ll write, make your own “writing assignments,” and end with a public reading! Led by Marcia Hurlow.
BURIED TREASURE: DISCOVERING KENTUCKY FOLKLORE
Mon-Fri
July 20-24
8:30 am-12:30 pm
Did you know Kentucky is teeming with talented musicians, storytellers, archaeologists, craftspeople, and artists? Spend a week with this camp and learn about the gifts that keep on giving in our state. Find out what it’s like to put together a story and perform it, try your hand at a new craft, and what it takes to preserve our state’s heritage! Prepare to be dazzled by your Bluegrass state! Led by Bianca Spriggs-Floyd
WALK ON THE WEST SIDE
Mon-Fri
July 20-24
1:00-5:00 pm
Starting from the Carnegie Center, we’ll head west (mostly) to explore the downtown area. We’ll sketch, photograph and write about the places, plantings and people we observe along the way. Each day we’ll investigate a different route, documenting what we find, then we’ll stop at Sisohpromatem Art Foundation (on West Short Street) to create art based on your impressions and found objects from the areas we visit! Led by Sonja Brooks.
